about

The work of Paul Valentin deals with questions of metaphysics, such as the concept of truth, nothingness or the structure of reality. Predominantly active in video art, his work also includes music, digital reliefs and sculptures. In his films he uses computer animation [cgi] to create and alter scenes, settings, and characters. Born the son of a theater sculptor, he is influenced by the sets of opera and film. The assembly shops, sets and props shaped the materiality and visual language of his films and are tied to a recurring theme in his projects – the question of how the world is constructed. While referencing greek mythology and philosophical ideas of antiquity, he remains antiplatonic, stating that truth after all can be found in fiction. His art is inspired by the literature of classical modernism and magical realism, such as the Duino Elegies by Rainer Maria Rilke (1912) or the stories of Louis Borges (1944-1952), already tending towards surrealism and experimental film. His relationship to the surreal is also expressed in a preference for paradoxes that, because of their disruptive structure, can turn our view of the world upside down. By synthesizing these 19th century ideas with contemporary ones, such as New Realism, Paul Valentin opens a new perspective on film as a medium and venue for philosophical discourse.

His works have been presented at the ARS Electronica, European Media Art Festival, Haus der Kunst, Museum Villa Rot, Centro Cultural Moçambique, Sluice Biennale London and Exchange Rates Festival in New York. He was nominated for the Celeste Prize London and was awarded the Karl & Faber Prize in 2019, as well as the Academy Association Prize the same year. In 2021 the City of Munich awarded him the Scholarship for fine arts.
about
Paul Valentin is a german artist currently based in Munich, working primarily with video and animation. He studied with Alexandra Bircken and graduated with a Master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 2019. His works deal with perennial or even intractable questions of metaphysics, the concept of emergence or non-linear temporality and it‘s effect on the genesis of novelty within complex systems, thus exploring the abandoned fundaments of reality.

Predominantly active in CG based video art, his work also includes music, sculptures and hybrid forms of painting and photography. He uses traditional computer animation to create and alter scenes, settings, and characters. Born the son of a theater sculptor, he is influenced by the sets of opera and film - The assembly shops, sets and props shaped the visual language of his films and are tied to a recurring theme of his projects – the question of how the world itself is constructed. Besides the literature of classical modernism and magical realism, his works are referring to the ongoing sci-fi story „FORMULA“ that he started in 2021. It serves as a background on which his films are staged like re-enactments that create fragmentary references. By synthesizing his ideas with modern and contemporary philosophy, Paul Valentin creates a new perspective on film as a medium and venue of philosophical discourse.

His work has been presented at the ARS Electronica and the European Media Art Festival, he had several shows at Haus der Kunst Munich, Frieder Burda Museum, Museum Villa Rot and Gustav-Luebke Museum of Hamm. They were internationally presented at Centro Cultural Moçambique, Sluice Biennale London and the Exchange Rates Festival in New York. He was nominated for the Celeste Prize London and was awarded the Karl & Faber Prize in 2019, as well as the Academy Association Prize the same year. In 2021 the City of Munich awarded him the Scholarship for fine arts. His films are part of the ERES-Collection and since 2022 he is represented by Britta Rettberg Gallery.
